age-related pain
For
many people, age-related conditions can cause pain. For example,
osteoarthritis can cause
painful joints and make movement difficult. At Pain Partners, MD, we can
treat arthritis and many other so-called “age-related” pain conditions:
Arthritis – Degenerative
diseases such as osteoarthritis usually occur in older people as a result
of wear of the joints between the bones. Arthritis can cause destruction of
the joints as well as stiffness and intense, debilitating pain.
Cervical disc
degeneration – This
condition can cause neck pain. The disc acts as a shock absorber between
the bones in the neck. Adults with cervical disc degeneration (typically
over age 40) suffer when the normal gelatin-like center of the disc
degenerates and the space between the vertebrae narrows.
Hormonal changes
– Aging brings
about natural changes in our hormone levels. For example, testosterone in
men declines after age 40 and continues declining through the 50s, 60s, 70s
and beyond. Hormonal changes can bring about aches and pains throughout the
body in both males and females.
Thyroid problems
– All the cells in
the body need thyroid hormones to work properly. These hormones control how
fast the body uses energy. Adults and children can suffer from underactive
thyroid (hypoactive), overactive thyroid (hyperactive), goiter (swelling of
the thyroid), Grave’s disease and thyroid nodules.
